You are a Runner

There's something special about you.

Maybe someone tinkered with your genes before you were born. Maybe you will become the leader of the human resistance after the machine uprising. Maybe you've learned the secret of Carousel. Maybe you've committed a crime so heinous they'll never let you go. You know what you did. You don't know when they'll find you.

The Chasers are Coming

The Chasers know what you did. They know you got loose somehow. They know you can't be trusted. They know you're more dangerous than you know. They know their lives are on the line, and so are yours. They've come a long way for you. They're chasing you.

Escape

You need to escape. You need to get far enough away that they'll never find you. Just running isn't enough. You need to find help. You can't run by yourself. On foot, in a car, in a boat, on a plane, in a starship—they'll find you. They'll catch up and they'll take you. Unless you get away. Unless you escape.

Obstacles

Things get in the way when you're on the run. Sometimes you run into somebody in more trouble than you are. Sometimes they're just an innocent bystander, but you want to help them anyway. Sometimes the car breaks down. The boat leaks. The plane crashes. The starship gets searched. Sometimes you're just out of gas.

Ending it

If you can just shake them long enough, they'll lose track of you eventually. You can blend in, maybe. You can get an apartment, get a job, maybe meet somebody. Or maybe you just keep running because you don't know if they're behind you, just waiting.

You can go home again, see your parents, see your kids. You can get a dog.

You can sleep again.

Based on the minimalist TRPG Breathless, Running Breathless will keep you running back for more.

Intended for short play sessions of 1 to 5 players. GM optional.

You will create a runner. Someone with a particular skill or power. You'll create a situation. Maybe you're a psychic on the loose, or you've just pulled off the ultimate heist. Maybe you're running headfirst into a dungeon or away from aliens on a space station. No matter where you're running from, something's after you. You'll create a series of locations, each of which has a problem that you have to deal with before you can move on. Catch your breath when you can, go to ground when you must, and if you can find someone to help you.

Get away if you're lucky and you're cunning. The first thing you've got to do is run.
